HAPPY HOUR is a cocktail-fueled 60 minutes of random conversation with folks who have nothing in common, other than being New Orleanians in a bar. Featuring extraordinary New Orleans musicians playing live, host Grant Morris and sidekick deluxe Andrew Duhon.
With a Cajun French name like Sophie Lafayette, you might be surprised that not only is Sophie not French, or Cajun, she lives in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. What is even more intriguing is that Sophie is an avid New Orleans lover and regular Happy Hour listener, but has never been to New Orleans. On this show we talk to Sophie in Dar es Salaam and with the power vested in us by a collective 9 cocktails appoint her New Orleans ambassador to East Africa.
Normally, the invesitiure of an international ambassador with her duties would be the high point of a show, but on this Happy Hour it shares the limelight with the life and death story of singer, comedian, intellectual, P H Fred.
Mere hours before the show, an MRI turned up a tumor in Mr. Fred's head. He'd been having some weird neurological symptoms and, in all seriousness, Mr. Fred doesn't yet know if it's no big deal or his last hours on earth. For that reason he makes the most of it by unveiling his revolutionary app The Freducator, which will raise your ACT score up to 10 points (for real) and singing one of the weirdest songs in the history of Happy Hour that includes punning references to pop star fecal habits in the context of an ornithological psychological observation. Putting the "MR" in MRI, Mr. Fred never disappoints.
Continuing this hour's string of highlights, Paul Sanchez unleashes his effortless raconteurial abilities. They are, frankly, unrivaled.
Mr. Sanchez's ability to describe everything from American sociological history to what it's like to be in a successful, working rock band (Cowboy Mouth) is nothing short of poetic. And the title song off his new album, Everything That Ends Begins Again, will have you affirming life's infinite magic as you smile your way to your next (and possibly last) sangria.
We intend to have Mr. Sanchez back in 30 days and check on his weight.
Haley Burns just graduated from Tulane. Haley was in college studying developing nations when she got lucky and stumbled on New Orleans. She couldn't believe her good fortune: all her studies about the definition of the developing world - corruption, poor infrastructure, low educational standards, and a string of other descriptors - existed right here in the US! Using her 3rd world skills and inspired by the opportunity to help dig 3rd world inhabitants out of poverty right here at home, Haley has launched a micro-loan non-profit called Fund 17. She also has new Central City digs, Hillary the new room mate, and possibly the best makeup skills outside of Dar es Salaam, or Cairo, or wherever makeup was invented.
